East Jefferson High defensive back Derrick Raymond was completely unknown two months ago. Now, he is the newest member of the LSU Tigers Football team after he committed on the spot to Les Miles on Saturday at the LSU Family Picnic.
“I sat down with Coach Miles and as soon as he told me they wanted me, I told them I want to commit.” a shy Raymond said while leaving the LSU campus. “I never thought I would ever get this opportunity, so I took it.”
Raymond was brought to LSU by his high school coach, Nick Saltaformaggio. Saltaformaggio has maintained from the start that Raymond has the type of talent to be a big time SEC football player.
“When he gets to LSU and does what he is capable of, he is going to show the world.” A overjoyed Saltaformaggio said. “I am so freakin jacked up! This kid has overcome so much, and now he gets to play at the best football program in America.”
Raymond will play for East Jefferson this season after sitting out following transferring from Port Allen.
Earlier this month Raymond won the 100 and 200 meter state titles in 4A. A 2.8 student he is on pace to be a full qualifier.
