LSU picked up their 15th commitment in the class of 2012 today when Buford, GA deep snapper Reid Ferguson made a call to the LSU football offices and talked to Special Teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey and head coach Les Miles.
For Ferguson the commitment to LSU was tough, but at the end his comfort with the overall LSU program was the key.
“It was a difficult decision for me.” Ferguson said. “LSU & Tennessee were my top 2 and my family and I figured out that LSU is the best fit for me. With the relationship with the coaches and the players and the times I visited, it is just the best fit for me.
Ferguson was high on LSU all along, but after the departure of former special teams coordinator Joe Robinson to North Carolina he wanted to get to know the new LSU coordinator.
It did not take long for McGaughey to win Ferguson over.
“It took me about 1 visit with coach Mcgaughey to get our relationship rolling. I really like him and I am excited about working with him. He has coached in the NFL and has worked with the best.”
In addition to the staff move Ferguson also knew that for a player with as specific a talent as deep snapping is getting offers from major colleges are a lot of work. And even if a school really likes his talent, there may not be a spot available for a snapper.
“I knew I had to get my name in front of every coach in the country. It is a lot about selling yourself. I sent film to a lot of colleges and it worked out for me that LSU was interested.”
And the interest was mutual. Following a trip to Baton Rouge last football season Ferguson became very interested in LSU.
“The trip to Baton Rouge for the Alabama game was really the point where I thought I was at the right place. I never had an offer then, but I knew it was just the right feeling. I got a great feel for the city and the school and as I got deeper into the process I knew I wanted to be a Tiger. And the relationship with the coaches just makes it perfect.”
It is that relationship that led to the phone call to the staff this morning and the response from coaches Miles and McGaughey that Ferguson received.
“Coach Miles was very excited, he expressed to me he was very excited about working with me. Him and Coach McGaughey said they cant wait to coach me.”
