One of the biggest needs in the LSU Tigers class of 2012 was filled on Tuesday when Les Miles took a call from Indiana.
Looking at the 812 area code on the caller ID must have brought a smile to the face of the head coach, as it was Gunner Kiel the five star quarterback from East High in Columbus, IN, on the other line.
Kiel, who had previously committed and then decommitted and opened his recruiting process to the in-state Indiana Hoosiers earlier in the recruiting process, made his final decision to wear purple and gold following an unofficial visit to LSU for the Arkansas game the day after Thanksgiving and came back for an official visit less than two days after returning home from the unofficial visit.
Kiel, 6-4, 220, had offers from nearly every college football program.
His final choices were LSU, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and USC.
Kiel had a successful senior season, throwing for 2,523 yards and 28 touchdowns as a senior. His older brothers Drew and Dusty play college football at Illinois State and Indiana, and his uncle Blair was a starting quarterback at Notre Dame in the early 80’s.
Gunner has already finished his high school requirements and will enroll at LSU for the spring semester.
He is the 22nd player in the Class of 2012 and the first quarterback in the class.
